Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce pojednává o autobiografických aspektech prvního románu Samuela Becketta Dream of Fair to Middling Women. Román je rozdělen do čtyř oddílů, každý z těchto oddílů pak tvoří jednu každou kapitolu v této práci. Aspekty příběhu, které se shodují s životem autora, jsou přiblíženy čtenáři v pořadí, v jakém se v románu objevují. Analýza těchto autobiografických aspektů je čtenáři předložena na základě mých rozsáhlých znalostí autorova života v období předcházejícím sepsání románu, tj. mezi léty 1906 a 1932. Tato analýza je navíc doplněná o interpretaci motivů objevujících se v analyzovaných sekcích textu, zvláštní pozornost je v tomto ohledu věnována motivu sexu a sexuality.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s diploma thesis deals with the use of autobiographical aspects in Samuel Beckett’s earliest novel Dream of Fair to Middling Women. The thesis divides the novel into four sections and each of these sections constitute one chapter of the thesis. In these chapters, the outline of the story is followed and those segments of the novel that appear to be inspired or modelled on real life experiences of the author are pointed out and explained in order of appearance. The explanations are based on extensive knowledge of the author’s life, specifically, the period prior to the writing of the novel, that is, 1906 – 1932. The examination of the autobiographical aspects of the novel is supplemented by interpretations of themes and motifs connected with the highlighted segments, with emphasis on the dominant theme of sex and sexuality.
