Developmental aspects of social cognition in children of preschool age

Abstract:

Abstrakt: Období předškolního věku je zásadním obdobím v životě jedince. V tomto období dochází k rozvoji exekutivních a sociálních funkcí vlivem začátku docházky do mateřské školy. V souvislosti s rozvojem těchto funkcí můžeme pozorovat mnoho komplexních a dynamických změn struktur a funkcí lidského mozku. Mezi tyto změny patří například nárůst šedé a bílé hmoty mozkové a rozvoj neurálních sítí. Tato práce se zabývá jak teoretickými poznatky o konceptech exekutivních funkcích a sociální kognice, tak jejich neurologickým základem. Dále se věnuje neurovývojovým poruchám a patologiím souvisejícím s narušenými exekutivními funkcemi a sociální kognicí, jako je například Porucha autistického spektra či traumatické zranění mozku. V praktické části je rozebrán výzkum zaměřený na vztah mezi exekutivními funkcemi a sociální kognicí provedený na populaci dětí docházejících do mateřských škol v Moravskoslezském a Jihomoravském kraji pomocí testové baterie IDS a prototypu neurorehabilitačního nástroje PROXYQB. Výzkum se zaměřil na identifikaci korelací mezi subtesty IDS zaměřených na exekutivní funkce a sociální kognici, na korelace totožně zaměřených subtestů nástroje PROXYQB, a závěrem na korelaci subtestů pro oba použité nástroje. Výsledky korelačních testů potvrdily statisticky významnou korelaci pro subtesty IDS Selektivní pozornost a Porozumění sociálním situacím. Dále poukázaly na existenci slabého korelačního vztahu mezi časy úloh PROXYQB Rychle a přesně najdi a Sociální kognice. Vzájemná korelace mezi subtesty IDS a PROXYQB však prokázána nebyla. Tato práce svými poznatky přináší potvrzení nutnosti prověření domény sociální kognice při identifikaci deficitů u exekutivních funkcí, jelikož deficit exekutivních funkcí může být ukazatelem deficitu v sociální kognici. Zároveň je provedený výzkum dalším krokem k ověření funkčnosti prototypu neurorehabilitačního nástroje PROXYQB pro možnou rehabilitaci exekutivních funkcí a sociální kognice.

Abstract:

The preschool period is a crucial time in the life of an individual. In this period, the development of executive and social functions occurs due to the beginning of preschool attendance. In connection with the development of these functions, we can observe many complex and dynamic changes in the structures and functions of the human brain. These changes include, for example, an increase in the grey and white matter of the brain and the development of neural networks. This thesis discusses both the theoretical knowledge of the concepts of executive functions and social cognition and their neurological basis. It also discusses neurodevelopmental disorders and pathologies related to impaired executive functions and social cognition, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder and traumatic brain injury. The practical part of the thesis discusses research on the relationship between executive functions and social cognition conducted on a population of children attending preschools in the Moravian-Silesian and South Moravian regions using the IDS test battery and the prototype of the PROXYQB neurorehabilitation tool. The research focused on the identification of correlations between the IDS subtests focused on executive functions and social cognition, correlations of identically focused subtests of the PROXYQB instrument, and finally correlations of subtests for both instruments used. The results of the correlation tests confirmed statistically significant correlations for the IDS subtests Selective Attention and Understanding Social Situations. Furthermore, they indicated the existence of a weak correlation between the PROXYQB Quick and Accurate Find and Social Cognition task times. However, a correlation between the IDS and PROXYQB subtests was not demonstrated. With its findings, this study provides confirmation of the need to examine the Social Cognition domain when identifying deficits in executive function, as deficits in executive function may be an indicator of deficits in Social Cognition. At the same time, the conducted research is a further step towards validating the functionality of the prototype PROXYQB neurorehabilitation tool for the possible rehabilitation of executive functions and social cognition,
