The Phenomenon of Populism and the Dominant Actors of Slovak Politics

Abstract:

The study defines the basic characteristics and general meanings of populism - the phenomenon of modern politics on the basis of concepts of several authors, with the accent on the works of Cas Mudde and Margaret Canovan, and on this theoretical base identifies the appeals of political and economic populism in the politics of selected parties:HZDS and Smer. The ambition of this work is to outline the tactics of modern parties, which take advantages of public support because of stressing the dichotomy of ,,poor people" and the ,,corrupt elite". The aim of the work is also analyzing the other factors of political populism: the critics of establishment, using the catch all pragmatism, the ,,vox populi" party image and using of national appeals and charismatic leadership. The study tries to lay out the complete information about the forms of political populism in general, and even on Slovakian political scene.

Abstract:

Práca pojednáva o populizme ako o fenoméne súčasnej doby, snažiac sa zachytiť jeho základné významy a charakteristiky v kontexte prác viacerých autorov, s dorazom na koncepty Casa Mudda a Margaret Canovan, na ktorých teoretickom základe následne identifikuje prvky politického a ekonomického populizmu v politike vybraných subjektov slovenského straníckeho spektra: konkrétne HZDS a Smeru. Zameriava sa na taktiku moderných politických strán, využívajúcich dichotómiu medzi ,,úbohým ľudom" a ,,skorumpovanou elitou", na základe ktorej strany získavajú voličskú podporu, spolu so zapojením ďalších prvkov politického populizmu ako napríklad: kritikou establishmentu, prezentáciou príslušnej strany ako ,,hlasu ľudu" - vox populi, či aplikovaním nacionálnych sentimentov a charizmatického vodcovstva. Práca predstavuje pokus o podanie komplexnej informácie o podobách politického populizmu tak, ako ho vníma akademická obec, i o jeho konkrétnych formách na slovenskej politickej scéne.
