Changes of Style in the Mirror of Jane Austen's Novels

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce Proměna vkusu v zrcadle románů Jane Austenové se zabývá problematikou proměny institucí a s ní související otázkou sociální reprezentace, která zasahovala do děl Jane Austenové, tedy: Northangerské opatství, Mansfieldské panství, Emma, Anna Elliotová, Rozum a cit, Pýcha a předsudek. Práce nejprve přibližuje pojem vkusu a představuje různorodost jeho definic. Dále vyzdvihuje hlavní aspekty, které měly dopad na vývoj společnosti na začátku 19. století a jejich vliv na Jane Austenovou. Tyto aspekty jsou nezbytné k pochopení jejího záměru dosažení rovnosti v manželství, který často promítá do svých děl. Je představen a vysvětlen pojem iluze osobnosti, pomocí něhož je proveden rozbor každého románu Jane Austenové. Jednotlivě jsou rozebírány hlavní hrdinky a jejich postupná přeměna z karikatury na osobnost, která je dle Austenové nutná pro harmonické manželství.

Abstract:

The Bachelor Thesis Changes of style in the mirror of Jane Austen's novels deals with problems of institutions' transformation and related question of social representation that affected Jane Austen's novels, namely Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park, Emma, Anne Elliot, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility. First of all, my thesis describes the concept of style and introduces variety of its definitions. Afterwards it highlights the main aspects which affected the development of society at the beginning of the 19th century, and their influence on Jane Austen. These aspects are crucial for understanding her intention to reach the equality in marriage, which can often be found in her books. The concept of the illusion of personality, whereby every Austen's novel is analysed, is introduced and explained here. The thesis analyses main female characters and their gradual change from a caricature to a personality crucial for harmonious marriage according to Austen.
