Bata's factory in Peñaflor: the history and legacy of Czech industry in Chile

Abstract:

Tato práce prezentuje historii působení Baťova závodu a jeho odkaz v chilském městě Peñaflor. První část práce je zaměřena na historii značky Baťa a její expanzi do světa a do Chile. V následující krátké kapitole je vysvětlen národní kontext v Chile v období 30. let. Hlavní kapitola práce se zabývá historii Baťova závodu od příjezdu českých Baťovců po ukončení provozu továrny v roce 2012. Autorka zde prostřednictvím literární rešerše vícejazyčných zdrojů doplněné o informace poskytnuté během rozhovorů identifikuje hlavní oblasti vlivu Baťova podniku na rozvoj města. V závěrečné části je analyzován odkaz, který zde firma ponechala. Autorka vedla celkem tři rozhovory s občany Peñafloru, ve kterých použila metodu orální historie. V práci bylo zjištěno, že společnost Baťa neovlivnila pouze demografický a hospodářský růst města. Zasloužila se i o zkvalitnění sociálního a kulturního života místních a o výstavbu městské infrastruktury, z níž nejvýznamnější bylo budování domů pro pracovníky továrny. Družstevní domy jsou považovány jako součást Baťova dědictví, stejně jako první hasičský sbor, sportovní zázemí nebo bývalé prostory továrního areálu. V rámci studie Baťova odkazu bylo zjištěno, že míra spříznění s tímto dědictvím je napříč městskou společností odlišná. Dědictví se ukázalo být nejvýznamnějším pro potomky českých Baťovců a pamětníky období největšího rozvoje podniku a města.

Abstract:

This thesis presents the history of the Bata factory and its legacy in the Chilean town of Peñaflor. The first part of the thesis focuses on the history of the Bata brand and its expansion into the world and into Chile. The following short chapter explains the national context in Chile in the 1930s. The main chapter of the thesis presents the history of the Bata factory from the arrival of Czech Bata workers to the closure of the factory in 2012. The author of the thesis identifies the main areas of Bata's influence on the development of the city through a literature search of multilingual sources supplemented by information provided during interviews. The final section identifies the legacy left by the company. The author conducted a total of three interviews with citizens of Peñaflor, using the oral history method. The thesis found that Bata did not only influence the demographic and economic growth of the town. It also contributed to the improvement of the social and cultural life of the locals and to the construction of urban infrastructure, the most important of which was the building of houses for the factory workers. The cooperative houses are considered part of Bata's heritage, as are the first fire brigade, sports facilities and the former factory premises. In a study of Bata's legacy, it was found that the significance of this heritage varies across urban society. with heritage being most significant for those who lived through the period of greatest development of the company and the city. The legacy proved to be the most significant for the descendants of the Czech Bata workers and for those who remember the period of the greatest development of the company and the city.
