Humor in EFL classrooms - its varieties, benefits, risks, and where to draw the line

Abstract:

Pristupujúc k humoru ako k uznávanému dvojsečnému meču v pedagogickom prostredí, zámerom tejto práce bolo identifikovať efektívne spôsoby využitia humoru ako vyučovacieho nástroja, poskytnúť návrhy na predchádzanie alebo prekonávanie nebezpečenstiev spojených s jeho používaním a určiť hranice týkajúce sa jeho vhodnosti. Po preskúmaní možných stratégií využitia humoru vo vyučovaní a po adresovaní príčin, ktoré prispievajú k váhavosti učiteľov používať humor v ich výukovom prístupe, sa na strednej odbornej škole v Českej republike uskutočnila štúdia s využitím kvalitatívnych a kvantitatívnych výskumných metód. Pozostávala z pozorovania tried (1. - 4. ročník), dotazníkového prieskumu (N=47), a 2 individuálnych rozhovorov s učiteľmi. Cieľ štúdie bol dosiahnutý, pričom výskum ponúkol významný náhľad do perspektívy učiteľov aj študentov a poskytol pedagógom cenné rady. Jedna rada sa avšak ukázala ako najdôležitejšia: „Poznaj svoju triedu.“

Abstract:

Approaching humor as a recognized double-edged sword in the pedagogical setting, the thesis aimed to identify effective ways to utilize humor as a teaching tool, provide suggestions to avoid or overcome dangers associated with its use, and determine the boundaries regarding its appropriateness. After exploring possible strategies utilizing humor in teaching and addressing the reasons contributing to teachers’ hesitancy to use humor in their teaching approach, a study employing qualitative and quantitative research methods was conducted at a vocational high school in the Czech Republic. It consisted of class observations (Years 1-4), a questionnaire survey (N=47), and 2 one-on-one teacher interviews. The objective of the thesis was achieved, with the research offering significant insight into the perspectives of both teachers and students and providing educators with valuable guidance. However, one piece of advice proved to bear the utmost significance: “Know your class.”
