The genetics of eye diseases in clinical practice. Possibilities of diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract:

The main idea of this bachelor thesis is to describe certain diseases of the eye based on the genetic basis together with the choice of the right steps to their diagnosis, and further to point out the possibilities of treatment or more precisely therapy of these conditions. At the beginning, it is possible to get to know the basic concepts of genetics as well as its journey from the past to its present state. The most extensive part of this thesis is represented by inherited diseases of the eye, focusing on inherited corneal, retinal and optic nerve disorders as the most common ones leading to severe impairment of visual functions. An individual chapter is devoted to the current state of knowledge in the gene therapy field as a promising treatment option of genetic pathological conditions. Finally, I emphasize the importance of ethical and legal issues in medical genetics.

Abstract:

Hlavnou myšlienkou tejto bakalárskej práce je priblížiť vybrané ochorenia oka založené na genetickom podklade spoločne s voľbou správnych krokov k ich diagnostike. Cieľom práce je taktiež poukázať na možnosti liečby, resp. terapie týchto stavov. V úvode je možné sa oboznámiť so základnými pojmami z oblasti genetiky ako aj samotnou cestou genetiky až po súčasnosť. Najrozsiahlejšiu kapitolu predstavujú samotné dedične podmienené ochorenia oka so zameraním sa na ochorenia rohovky, sietnice a zrakového nervu, ako ochorenia najčastejšie sa vyskytujúce a vedúce k závažnejšiemu postihnutiu zrakových funkcií. Samostatná kapitola je venovaná súčasnému stavu poznania v oblasti génovej terapie ako nádejnej možnosti v liečbe genetických patologických stavov. Záverom je vyzdvihnutá dôležitosť eticko-právnej problematiky, s ktorou sa lekárska genetika stretáva.
