Causes of persistent differences between the old and new Länder

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá důvody, kvůli nimž nové spolkové země zaostávají za původními spolkovými zeměmi. K vyrovnání jejich ekonomické vyspělosti totiž nedošlo ani za 30 let německé jednoty, a to i přesto, že novým spolkovým zemím byla po tuto dobu poskytnuta značná finanční podpora. Práce zároveň vyhodnocuje, jak se bývalé Východní Německo změnilo po pádu Železné opony, a zda došlo alespoň v některých oblastech hospodářství ke zlepšení. Nejprve je rozebrán stav Německa po skončení 2. světové války, a poté zhodnocena efektivita socialisticky řízeného hospodářství. Následně je pozornost zaměřena na dobu znovusjednocení Německa a s tím související transformační šok pro nové spolkové země. Nakonec jsou rozebrány jednotlivé ekonomické ukazatele, ve kterých nové spolkové země stále zaostávají.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis examines the reasons why the new federal states are lagging behind. The new Länder have not caught up with the original Länder (states) in terms of economic development. Even during the 30 years of German unity, despite the fact that the new Länder have received considerable financial support during this time. The thesis also assesses how the former Eastern Germany has changed since the fall of the Iron Curtain and whether there has been improvement in at least some areas of the economy. It first discusses the state of Germany after the end of World War II, and then assesses the effectiveness of the socialist-run economy. Subsequently, attention is focused on the period of German reunification and the associated transition shock for the new federal states. Finally, various economic indicators in which the former East Germany still lags behind are discussed.
