Madness as a Typical Feature of Selected 19th Century Soprano Roles

Abstract:

This diploma work offers an insight, how Italian composers of the 19th century used madness in their operas. On the example of four chosen operas of the 19th Century, Bellini´s I Puritani, Donizetti´s Lucia di Lammermoor, Verdi´s Macbeth and Boito´s Mefistofele is shown by which means composers musically illustrated insanity within the interpretation of vocal parts of the soprano voice. There is also given an overview about historical and literary background, to try to explain, why in the 19th Century an increasing number of operas with madness as a topic have been composed.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce nabízí vhled do problematiky užití tématu šílenství v operách italských skladatelů 19.století. Na příkladech konkrétních čtyř vybraných italských oper 19.století - Belliniho Puritánech, Donizettiho Lucii di Lammermoor, Verdiho Macbethovi a Boitove Mefistofelovi - jsou zkoumány různé způsoby, techniky znázornění šílenství a odlišné či naopak podobné přístupy vybraných skladatelů v rámci sopránového hlasového oboru. Součástí práce je přehled o historickém a literárním pozadí problematiky šílenství a snaha poskytnout odpověď na otázku "z jakého, nebo jakých důvodů došlo v 19.století k nárůstu kompozic oper s tématem šílenství.
