Modeling of crop rotation as an adaptation measures for changing climate condition

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce je založena na oponovaných vědeckých publikací zaměřující se na hodnocení vývoje a výnosů polních plodin v rámci přirozených i simulovaných klimatických extrémů (sucho, teplotní extrémy) a modelování růstu a vývoje těchto plodin v různých půdně-klimatických podmínkách pomocí růstových modelů. Hlavním cílem této práce bylo vyhodnotit použitelnost růstových modelů k simulaci růstu a vývoje 4 významných plodin (pšenice ozimá, ječmen jarní, řepka ozimá, silážní kukuřice) v podmínkách České republiky. Jedná se o nezbytný krok k následným simulacím osevních postupů a adaptačních opatření v podmínkách změny klimatu. Dílčími cíli bylo pomocí metod „in vitro“ a „in situ“ kvantifikovat dopady stresu vlivem zvýšených teplot a sucha a hodnotit schopnost reprodukovat tyto reakce pomocí růstových modelů, tj. metody „in silico“. Tato práce je zároveň odpovědí na konkrétní otázky týkající se jak schopnosti modelu HERMES simulovat vliv přirozených povětrnostních podmínek, tak i dopadů redukce srážkových úhrnů pomocí experimentálních zákrytů na růst a vývoj významných polních plodin a na vybrané půdní procesy v porovnání s metodou „in situ“. Vliv stresu suchem na plodiny byl potvrzen v rámci metod „in vitro“ v růstových komorách a „in situ“ v rámci polního experimentu. Výsledky polního pokusu pak byly následně využity i k vyhodnocení metody „in silico“ při modelování pomocí růstového modelu HERMES. Součástí disertační práce je ansámblová simulace 13 růstových modelů, kde model HERMES měl sice průměrné výsledky, avšak přispěl pro hodnocení ansámblu jako celku, kdy medián tohoto souboru se ve většině případů blížil skutečnosti.

Abstract:

This thesis is based on opposing scientific publications focusing on the evaluation of the development and yields of field crops under natural and simulated climatic extremes (drought, temperature extremes) and the modeling of the growth and development of these crops in different soil-climatic conditions using growth models. The main aim of this work was to evaluate the applicability of growth models to simulate the growth and development of 4 important crops (winter wheat, spring barley, winter rape, silage maize) in the conditions of the Czech Republic. This is a necessary step towards using subsequent simulations of crop rotations as an adaptation measures under climate change. The partial aim was to quantify stress effects due to increased temperature and drought using „in vitro“ and „in situ“ methods and to evaluate the ability to reproduce these responses using crop growth models, i. e. „in silico“ methods. This thesis also answers to specific questions regarding both the ability of the HERMES model to simulate the influence of weather conditions, as well as the effects of the reduction of precipitation totals using experimental rain-out shelters on the growth and development of important field crops and on selected soil processes in comparison with the „in situ“ method. The effect of drought stress on crops was confirmed within „in vitro“ method in growth chambers and „in situ“ method within a field experiment. The results of the field trial were subsequently used to evaluate the „in silico“ method in modeling using the HERMES crop growth model. Under ensemble simulation of 13 growth model as a last part of this thesis, the HERMES model had average results, but it contributed to the valuation of the ensemble as a whole, when the median of this ensemble was close to reality in most cases.
