Self-stigma among psychology students

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the problem of self-stigma. The goal of this thesis is to explore self-stigma among Czech psychology students and to gain insight into their attitudes to-wards seeking professional psychological help during emotional crises or when experiencing problems with their mental health. This thesis looks at factors of gender, attended university, degree and length of studies and future career or academic inclinations and their impact on self-stigma and attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help among 139 Czech university students. The research shows that Czech university students experience low self-stigma and hold positive attitudes towards seeking help. This con-firms the general trend of low self-stigma among psychology students and mental health workers across different countries. Women held more positive attitudes towards seeking help and reported less experienced self-stigma than men. Students attending bigger universities with more students also held more positive attitudes towards seeking help and reported less experienced self-stigma than students attending smaller universities with less students. Further exploration of these differences could be the subject of additional research.

Abstract:

Táto bakalárska práca sa zaoberá skúmaním problematiky self-stigmy. Cieľom práce bolo preskúmať zažívanú self-stigmu u českých univerzitných študentov psychológie a ich postoje k vyhľadaniu odbornej psychologickej pomoci počas emočných kríz a pri problémoch v oblasti duševného zdravia. Práca skúmala vplyv pohlavia, navštevovaných univerzít, stupňa a dĺžky štúdia a budúceho kariérneho a akademického smerovania na mieru self-stigmy a na postoje k vyhľadaniu odbornej pomoci u 139 českých univerzitných študentov. Z výskumu vyplynulo, že študenti psychológie českých univerzít dosahujú nízke priemerné hodnoty self-stigmy a zastávajú pozitívnejší postoj k vyhľadaniu profesionálnej psychologickej pomoci. To podporuje všeobecný trend nízkych hodnôt self-stigmy u študentov psychológie a pracovníkov v oblasti duševného zdravia naprieč rôznymi krajinami. Ženy dosahovali štatisticky významne nižšie hodnoty self-stigmy a zastávali pozitívnejší postoj k vyhľadaniu odbornej pomoci ako muži. Študenti univerzít s väčším počtom študentov taktiež dosahovali nižšie hodnoty self-stigmy a zastávali pozitívnejší postoj k vyhľadaniu odbornej pomoci ako študenti univerzít s menším počtom študentov. Ďalšie preskúmanie všetkých rozdielov sa tak stáva námetom pre ďalší výskum.
