Analysis of Learner-Learner Interaction in English as a Foreign Language Teaching

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá, jak studenti střídají kódy v průběhu skupinové práce a práce v párech v kurzech angličtiny jako cizího jazyka, a jakou roli hraje čeština a angličtina v těchto situacích. V první části práce prezentuje teoretická východiska společně s přehledem relevantních studií vztahujících se k této oblasti. Potom se věnuje už vykonanému výzkumu v oblasti střídání kódů. Tato diplomová práce analyzuje data získaná v průběhu kurzů angličtiny jako cizího jazyka, realizovaných v rámci terciárního vzdělávání, v průběhu pěti vyučovacích jednotek při práci v malých skupinách a párech. Těchto patnáct nahrávek čítá dohromady 7709 slov (tedy 1062 řádků). Pomocí konverzační analýzy byly nahrávky pro potřeby této práce přepsány a analyzovány. Zaměřuje se především na opravné sekvence a odbočení od úkolů (tzv. off-task talk). V závěru práce jsou diskutovány dopady výuky angličtiny jako cizího jazyka a doporučení pro další výzkum v této oblasti.

Abstract:

The thesis explores how the students used code-switching during group and pair work activities in an EFL classroom setting and what roles do English and Czech play in these situations. First, the thesis presents theoretical concepts and their description, along with an overview of relevant research done in this area. Then, it introduces the research conducted on code-switching. The present thesis works with data acquired in a higher education EFL course over the course of five lessons in small groups and pairs. The fifteen recordings analysed amount to 7 709 words (1 062 lines of transcripts). Using conversation analysis, the recordings were then transcribed and explored in this thesis. The data analysis presents the most notable findings concerning code-switching during small group and pair work activities. The students here used code-switching namely to conduct repair sequences and off-task talk. The thesis concludes with a discussion of implications for EFL teaching and recommendations for further research.
