Thematic Apperception Test in children with Asperger syndrom

Abstract:

Cílem práce bylo zjistit, jaké příběhy tvoří děti s Aspergerovým syndromem (AS) v Tématickém apercepčním testu (TAT). Příběhy evokované tabulemi TAT jsem interpretovala pomocí skórovacích systémů posuzujících interpersonální decentraci a empatii. Předpokládala jsem, že se děti s AS budou odlišovat od dětí bez AS právě v těchto charakteristikách a že TAT je ve vztahu k oběma konceptům senzitivním diagnostickým nástrojem. Výzkumné soubory tvořilo deset chlapců s AS a deset chlapců bez AS v mladším školním věku. Obě skupiny jsem porovnala pomocí neparametrického Mann-Whitney testu. Rovněž jsem provedla kvalitativní analýzu příběhů pro každého participanta a pro každou použitou tabuli TAT zvlášt a vytvořila tak “case book” jako zdroj porozumění AS na základě tvorby příběhů evokovaných TAT. Zjistila jsem, že TAT příběhy chlapců s Aspergerovým syndromem jsou charakteristické obtížemi v percepční integraci (komponenta empatie), dále pak interakcemi na úrovni předinternalizačního stádia interpersonální decentrace, častějším výskytem příběhů bez interakce a tím, že úroveň interpersonální decentrace nemá zřejmou souvislost s věkem respondentů (tj. že se nelze pozorovat posun k vývojově zralejším formám interpersonální decentrace). Uvedená výzkumná zjištění mohou sloužit jako hypotézy pro další ověřování.

Abstract:

The aim of my thesis is to find what stories are created by children with Asperger Syndrome (AS) in the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT). I interpreted the stories evoked by TAT cards with score systems which judge the interpersonal decentring and empathy. I supposed that the children with AS would differ from the children without AS just in these characteristics and that TAT related to both concepts was a sensitive diagnostic tool. The research samples were made up of ten boys with AS and ten boys without AS at the primary school age. I compared both groups using the non-parametrical Mann-Whithey test. I also made the qualitative analysis of the stories for each participant and for each TAT card separately, thus creating a „case book“ as a source of understanding AS based on the creation of the stories evoked by TAT. I found that TAT stories of the boys with Asperger Syndrome are characterized by difficulties in perception integration (component of empathy), by interactions on the level of pre-internalizing stage of interpersonal decentring, by more frequent occurences of stories without interaction, and by the fact that the level of interpersonal decentring has no obvious connection with the respondents´ ages (i.e. there is no apparent shift to more mature forms of interpersonal decentring). The above stated research conclusions can become hypotheses for further testing.
