Analysis of "evil" characters in 3 novels by Amélie Nothomb

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis aims to analyze all different sorts of techniques used by Belgian writer Amélie Nothomb in order to depict « evil » characters in her novels Sulphuric Acid, Antichrista and Hygiene and the Assassin. The theoretical part of the thesis is devoted to explanation of key terms, defines all the possible means of characterization that add to the effect of “evil” characters, and explains the theories of narrative schemes. The practical part continues with the analysis of “evil” characters from selected novels from the individual’s point of view, and uses the theories of actantiel model by Algirdas Julien Greimas and of quinary scheme by Paul Larivaille to determine the role of “evil” characters from the collective point of view in order to evaluate their contribution to the construction of the intrigue in the different stages throughout the story. All three analyses are interlaced with extracts from selected novels to underline the effect of “evil”. The end of the thesis compares the three analysis in order to seize the gist of more or less hidden “evil” in the author’s novels and to summarize all kind of techniques that the author used to accomplish this target.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je analyzovat techniky, pomocí kterých belgická spisovatelka Amélie Nothomb vykresluje „záporné“ postavy v románech Kyselina sírová, Antechrista a Vrahova hygiena. Teoretická část práce se věnuje vysvětlení klíčových pojmů, rozebírá možné prvky charakterizace, které přispívají k následné definici románové postavy jako „záporné“, a vysvětluje teorii narativních schémat. Praktická část pak analyzuje záporné postavy vybraných děl z pozice jednotlivce, a posléze se opírá o teorii aktančního modelu Algirdase Juliena Greimase a kvinárního schématu Paula Larivaille pro určení role záporné postavy v kolektivu a její přínos pro konstrukci zápletky v různých etapách příběhu. Všechny tři analýzy jsou prokládány úryvky z vybraných románů pro podtrhnutí efektu „zla“. V závěru práce pak dochází k porovnání analýz jednotlivých děl, a zejména pak k uchopení skryté i méně skryté podstaty „zla“ v autorčiných románech a ke shrnutí všemožných technik, pomocí kterých se autorka snažila tohoto efektu docílit.
