Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp: evaluation of the concentration camp as a tourist attraction

Abstract:

Cílem předložené diplomové práce je zhodnocení bývalého koncentračního tábora Auschwitz-Birkenau jako atraktivity cestovního ruchu a předpokladů pro rozvoj cestovního ruchu v dané oblasti. Druhým cílem je zjištění zájmu o atraktivitu mezi studenty pražských vysokých škol. Dalšími dílčími cíli práce je definování pojmů dark tourism, holokaust tourism, koncentrační tábor a vyhlazovací tábor a těchto posledních dvou také určení rozdílů, které pojmy odlišují. První kapitoly představují obecné pojmy z cestovního ruchu, definují dark tourism a holocaust tourism, představují pojmy koncentrační tábor a vyhlazovací tábor. Další kapitoly poté představují již muzeum a památník Auschwitz-Birkenau jako takový a věnují se analýze jednotlivých předpokladů, které vyplývají z Mariotovy metody. Jedná se o selektivní, lokalizační a realizační předpoklady pro rozvoj cestovního ruchu. Zhodnocení muzea jako atraktivity je doplněno také o SWOT analýzu vnášející do úvahy také vnitřní faktory. Pro zjištění zájmů u studentů pražských škol bylo využito dotazníkového šetření. Dotazník byl vytvořen online a následně distribuován stejným způsobem.

Abstract:

The aim of the submitted diploma thesis is to evaluate the former Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp as a tourist attraction and preconditions for the development of tourism in the area. The second goal is to find out the interest in attractiveness among students of Prague universities. Other partial goals of the paper are to define the terms dark tourism, holocaust tourism, concentration camp and extermination camp and for these last two also to determine the differences that distinguish the terms. The first chapters introduce general terms from tourism, define dark tourism and Holocaust tourism, introduce the terms concentration camp and extermination camp. The following chapters then present the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum and Memorial as such and analyze the various preconditions that result from the Mariot method. These are selective, localization and implementation preconditions for the development of tourism. The evaluation of the museum as an attraction is also supplemented by a SWOT analysis that also takes into account internal factors. A questionnaire survey was used to find out the interests of students in Prague schools. The questionnaire was created online and then distributed in the same way.
