Abstract:

Hlavním tématem této práce je staroseverský koncept mytologických bytostí zvaných álfar, česky „álfové“, a jeho pozice v náboženských tradicích starých Seveřanů. Álfové vystupují ve staroseverské literatuře jako nepříliš jasně vymezená skupina, obvykle ale bývají charakterizováni jako nižší mytologické bytosti, spojené s přírodou, zemí a kulty plodnosti, v novověkém folklóru pak bývají ztotožňováni s malými „skřítky“, „šotky“ a „vílami“. Cílem této práce je pak pokusit se definovat álfy na základě jejich původních, nejstarších dochovaných významů a posoudit, nakolik lze dosavadní tvrzení o álfech podložit v pramenech. Za tímto účelem je nejprve stručně analyzován výskyt a charakter álfů ve staroseverských pramenech. Dále jsou porovnány způsoby, jakými k tomuto tématu přistupovali různí badatelé, počínaje „klasickými“ přehledy staroseverské (a germánské) mytologie a konče třemi studiemi z nedávné doby. Tyto dosavadní pokusy o konceptualizaci álfů jsou následně stručně shrnuty a různé asociace, které bývají álfům přisuzovány, jsou posouzeny z hlediska toho, nakolik jsou dohledatelné nebo odvoditelné z dobových pramenů. Na základě tohoto rozboru pak nabízím vlastní pokus o definici álfů, která je v důsledku opatrnějšího přístupu k pramenné základně i sekundární literatuře o poznání obecnější, ale snad také objektivnější, než většina předchozích. Závěr této práce tvoří porovnání álfů se staroirskými aes sídhe z hlediska možnosti jejich ztotožňování s mrtvými nebo s etnicky odlišnými skupinami a nastínění možných alternativních přístupů k problematice konceptualizace staroseverských álfů či nadpřirozených bytostí obecně.

Abstract:

The main theme of this thesis is the Old Norse concept of mythological beings called álfar, and it's position in the religious traditions of the Norsemen. Álfar appear in Old Norse literature only as an ambiguously delimited group of beings, they are, however, usually characterized as lesser mythological beings, associated with nature, earth and fertility cults. In modern folklore they are often identified with diminutive „sprites“, „goblins“ and „fairies“. The aim of this work is then to try define álfar on the grounds of their original, oldest extant meanings and to consider to what extend are the existing claims about álfar supported by primary sources. For this purpose, the occurrence and nature of the álfar in Old Norse sources is briefly analyzed in the first place. Then the various ways, in which the subject was approached by various researchers are compared, starting with "classical" overviews of Old Norse (and Germanic) mythology and ending with three recent studies. These previous attempts to conceptualize álfar are then briefly summarized and the various associations attributed to álfar are assessed in terms of how far can they be traced back to or be inferred from primary sources. Based on this analysis, I then attempt to offer my own definition of álfar, which, due to a more cautious approach to sources and secondary literature, is more general, but perhaps also more objective, than most of the previous ones. This thesis is concluded with a comparison of álfar and the Old irish aes sídhe, with regard to the possibility of their identification with the dead or ethnically different groups, and with an outline of the possible alternative approaches to the issue of conceptualization of Old Norse álfar or supernatural beings in general.
