Homophobia and transphobia in the environment of online videogames

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá homofobií a transfobií v prostředí online videoher. Zaměřuje se zejména na mikroagrese, ale i na nápadnější formy násilí v online prostoru ve spojitosti s tématem, na reprezentaci LGBTQ+ herními společnostmi včetně její stručné historie a vnímání aktuálního stavu těmi, kterých se týká, a rovněž na postoj hráčských komunit k tomuto tématu. Je věnována pozornost heteronormativním a cisnormativním principům prostupujícím postoje a předpoklady společnosti. Provedené kvalitativní výzkumné šetření je zaměřeno na zkušenosti queer osob s homofobií a transfobií zejména v podobě mikroagresí ve videohrách, na jejich hodnocení způsobu a míry reprezentace, a na vnímání případného ovlivnění prožitku ze hry těmito dvěma aspekty. Použitou výzkumnou metodou je polostrukturovaný rozhovor a celkem jsou sesbírána a využita data od sedmi participantek a participantů s queer sexuální identitou, kteří hráli videohry alespoň jednou měsíčně za uplynulého půl roku.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with homophobia and transphobia in the online video game environment. In particular, it focuses on microaggressions, but also on the more visible forms of violence in the online space, the representation of LGBTQ+ gaming companies, including a brief history and perception of the current state of affairs by those affected, as well as the attitudes of gaming communities towards this topic. Attention is paid to the heteronormative and cisnormative principles pervading societal attitudes and assumptions. The conducted qualitative research investigation focuses on queer people's experiences of homophobia and transphobia, particularly in the form of microaggressions in video games, their assessment of the manner and degree of representation, and their perceptions of how these two aspects may affect their experience of the game. The research method used is a semi-structured interview and in total, data from seven participants with a queer sexual identity who played video games at least once a month for the past six months are collected and used.
