Angola and Mozambique - fast decolonization, raw materials curse and development assistance

Abstract:

Cílem mé bakalářské práce bude zjistit, jaké faktory se podílely na relativním úpadku Angoly a Mozambiku po získání nezávislosti v roce 1975. Obě tyto bývalé portugalské kolonie byly provázeny revolucemi a dlouhými občanskými válkami, a přestože mají hodně společného, musíme každou z nich posuzovat zvlášť. Ve své práci se budu mj. zabývat hypotézou tzv. surovinového prokletí v Angole, která je významným exportérem ropy a diamantů. Moji snahou bude zjistit, proč bylo a je využití přírodního bohatství pro rozvoj této země sub-optimální. V Mozambiku pak sehrála významnou roli marxistická strana FRELIMO, jakožto příjemce ze zahraničí exportované ideologie. Proto se pokusím objasnit vliv této ideologie na domácí instituce a následně na ekonomiku. Důsledky činnosti této politické strany se snaží prostřednictvím rozvojové pomoci snížit MMF, Světová banka a další organizace. Úspěšnosti těchto aktivit, resp. jejich nezamýšleným důsledkům se ve své práci budu proto také zabývat.

Abstract:

The aim of my bachelor thesis is to determine what factors contributed to the relative decline of Angola and Mozambique after declaring independence in 1975. Both of these former Portuguese colonies came through revolutions and long civil wars. However, we consider each of them separately though they have much in common. In my work I deal i. a. with the hypothesis of the so-called curse of the raw materials in Angola which is a major exporter of oil and diamonds. My effort is to find out why the use of nature resources was and still is sub-optimal for the country development. The Marxist FRELIMO party has played a significant role in Mozambique as the recipient of abroad exported ideology. Therefore I attempt to clarify the impact of this ideology on domestic institutions and consequently on the economy. The IMF, the World Bank and other organizations are trying to reduce the impact of political parties through the development assistance. Therefore successes of the activities respectively their unintended consequences are mentioned in this work as well.
