Academic book reviews in English and Czech: a contrastive genre analysis

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem akademických knižních recenzí je představit nové knihy objevující se v určitých oblastech a ohodnotit jejich význam v daném oboru. Otázkou, na kterou se tato práce snaží v první části odpovědět, je, zda je možné pokládat akademické knižní recenze za žánr a do jaké míry můžeme tyto texty srovnávat ve dvou rozdílných jazykových komunitách. Studie staví na rétorické struktuře knižních recenzí představenou autorkou Motta-Roth (1996). Cílem této práce je zjistit, do jaké míry je tato struktura využívána ve vybraných knižních recenzích a jakým způsobem. Druhá část práce si dává za cíl odhalit, zda je možné tvrdit, že obě tyto jazykové komunity využívají evaluativní jazyk v obdobné míře, a zároveň se snaží zkoumat, jak je tato evaluace rozdělena v celkovém textu. Na základě žánrové analýzy byla rétorická struktura knižních recenzí analyzována ve dvou rozdílných jazykových komunitách - české a anglické - se zaměřením na společenské a humanitní vědy. Výzkum odhalil, že tyto dva jazyky využívají podobné postupy v organizaci knižní recenze. Zároveň bylo zjištěno, že míra, do jaké je evaluativní jazyk využíván v těchto knižních recenzích, je také srovnatelná a že postupy, které se využívají pro distribuci evaluace, jsou taktéž obdobné v obou analyzovaných jazycích.

Abstract:

The overall aim of the academic book reviews is to introduce new books to a particular discipline and to present their value in the field. The question raised in the first part of the thesis is whether the academic book review (BR) have its generic status and to what extent these texts can be compared in two different language communities. The study draws on rhetorical structure move model of book reviews presented by Motta-Roth (1996). The overall aim of the thesis is to reveal whether this structure is used in the academic BRs and how. The second part of the thesis aims to determine if these two language communities use the evaluative language comparatively and it also tries to analyse the distribution of this evaluation in the text. Following the genre analysis, the rhetorical structure of BRs was studied in two different language communities - in the Czech and English one - in the discipline of Arts & Humanities. The research revealed that these selected languages share similar patterns in the organization of BRs. The research also indicates that the amount of evaluative language used in the English and Czech BRs is comparable and that both of these language communities distribute the evaluative language in the BR in a very similar way.
