Numbers in Plato's Ontology, Cosmology and Politics

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je porovnat užití Platónova číselného výkladu skutečnosti na úrovni ontologie a kosmologie a rozhodnout, nakolik je takové užití systematické. Kapitola zabývající se ontologií je rozdělena na dvě části. První část se věnuje významu čísel v jednotlivých úrovních nadsmyslové skutečnosti, které jsou předmětem především nepsaných nauk a které jsou předmětem Aristotelovy kritiky. Druhá část se zabývá využitím čísel v teorii čtyř rodů v dialogu Filébos. Kapitola o kosmologii se věnuje číselné struktuře kosmu (duše a čtyř živlů), který demiurgos pomocí čísel pořádá. Analýzy z obou kapitol jsou nakonec použity k porovnání toho, zda je Platón v číselném výkladu skutečnosti v oblasti ontologie a kosmologie jednotný. V závěru je navrženo rozšíření do oblasti politiky.

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma thesis is to compare application of Plato's numerical interpretation of reality on the level of ontology and cosmology, and to determine to what extent this application is systematic. The chapter dealing with ontology is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on the significance of numbers on individual levels of supersensuous reality, which is the subject mainly of unwritten doctrines and which is the subject of Aristotle's criticism. The second part looks at the application of numbers in the theory of four classes in the dialogue Philebus. The chapter on cosmology deals with the numerical structure of cosmos (the soul and the four elements), which is organised by the demiurge, by means of numbers. Then, the analyses of the two chapters are used in a comparison which focuses on how consistent Plato is in his numerical interpretation of reality in ontology and cosmology. In the conclusion an extension into politics is suggested.
