LA-ICP-MS: method for imaging of geological samples

Abstract:

Metoda laserové ablace ve spojení s hmotnostní spektrometrií indukčně vázaného plazmatu (LA-ICP-MS) byla použita k tzv. geoimagingu – zobrazení distribuce prvků v geologických vzorcích. V rámci práce byla prováděna optimalizace metody, která zahrnovala studium podmínek měření a jejich vliv na prostorové rozlišení výsledného zobrazení. Testováno bylo zvýšení počtu měřených prvků v rámci analýzy, zvýšení rychlosti a zvětšení zobrazované oblasti. Snahou bylo také eliminovat případné artefakty, které snižují kredibilitu a reprezentativní charakter těchto zobrazení. I přes dodržení podmínek pro jejich minimalizaci však byly artefakty pozorovány. Vedle kvalitativní analýzy poskytující distribuční mapy prvků bylo cílem provést kvantifikaci těchto map ke zjištění obsahu prvků. Kvantifikace pomocí normalizace na sumu oxidů poskytuje přijatelné výsledky, nicméně bude potřeba zajistit vhodný referenční materiál, který by taktéž kredibilitu zobrazení distribuce prvků podpořil.

Abstract:

Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) method has been used for geoimaging – imaging of elemental distribution in geological samples. In this thesis, optimization of this method has been performed, including studying the measurement conditions and their influence on final spatial resolution. This work was also focused on increasing the number of measured elements in one analysis, the scan speed and the area for imaging. An effort has been made to eliminate imaging artifacts which decrease credibility and representative character of these images. Despite requirements for artifacts minimization being met the artifacts were observed. Apart from qualitative analysis showing distribution maps of elements, the aim was also to quantify these maps to achieve elements concentrations. Quantification using total sum of oxides normalization provides acceptable results, however, there is a need to obtain suitable reference material which would also support the credibility of generated maps.
