Conspiracy Theory Endorsement as a Reduction of Uncertainty in the Existence of Several Alternative Explanations

Abstract:

Konspirační teorie jsou často přijímány v krizových situacích. Pravděpodobně protože poskytují jednoduché odpovědi na složité problémy a protože lidé v těchto situacích postrádají jasná a jednoznačná vodítka pro pochopení takovýchto událostí. Pokud tedy budou lidem poskytnu-ta dvě vzájemně neslučitelná oficiální vysvětlení o významné události, situace se stane nejasnou. Lidé tak mohou pojmout podezření ohledně dané události a snáze přijmout konspirační teorii, která se nabízí jako koherentní, jasné a srozumitelné vysvětlení. Ačkoli je tento předpoklad často citován, dosud nebyl experimentálně prozkoumán. Cílem studie je prozkoumat potenciální moderační roli neslučitelných oficiálních vysvětlení při přijetí konspirační teorie a blíže porozumět roli informací v přijetí konspiračních teorií. Za tímto účelem byl vytvořen mezi-subjektový design sestávající ze 3 dotazníků, čtení 1 či 2 článků a čtení 1 konspiračního textu. Výsledná analýza byla provedena na 101 participantech (67 žen, 82 studentů). Výsledky neukazují, že by lidé vystaveni dvěma odlišným oficiálním vysvětlením vykazovali vyšší přijetí konspiračních teorií. Nicméně neekvivalencí obou skupin byla ve studii závažně narušena interní validita. Výzkum je jedním z mála zabývají-cích se rolí informací a komunikace na přijetí konspiračních teorií. Je rovněž jedním z mála vystavujících participanty konspiračnímu narativu, čímž nabízí přesnější měření.

Abstract:

Conspiracy theories are often accepted in crisis situations. Probably because they provide simple answers to complex problems, and because people in these situations lack clear and unambiguous guidelines for understanding such events. Therefore, if people are provided with two mutually incompatible official explanations of a significant event, the situation will become unclear. This makes it easier for people to get suspicious about the event, and to accept the conspiracy theory more easily. Since it offers a coherent, clear, and comprehensible explanation. Although this assumption is often cited, it has not been experimentally investigated yet. The aim of the study is to examine potential moderator effect of incompatible official explanations on conspiracy theory endorsement, and to better understand the role of information in the acceptance of conspiracy theories. For this purpose, a between-subject design was created consisting of 3 questionnaires, reading 1 or 2 articles, and reading 1 conspiracy text. The resulting analysis was performed on 101 participants (67 women, 82 students). The results do not indicate that people exposed to two different official explanations show a higher conspiracy theory endorsement. However, the internal validity was severely threatened by the non-equivalence of both groups. This research is one of the few concerning the role of information and communication in conspiracy theory endorsement. It is also one of the few exposing participants to a conspiracy narrative, thereby offering more accurate measurements.
