Fight against anglicisms in Quebec

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the use of anglicisms in Québec and the fight against them. The authorities of that province defend their official French language against Anglicisms. The theoretical part describes the geographical, historical, and linguistic situation in Québec, among other things, with the help of graphs and concrete figures. It also discusses the institutions, authorities, and laws that put the use of the French language ahead of the use of anglicisms. Finally, the theoretical part explains the concept of anglicisms and traces its typology. In the practical part, it was essential to create a glossary of anglicisms, to trace suitable French equivalents to them, and thus to emphasize the important priority of using just the French language in Quebec.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá užíváním anglicismů v Québecu a bojem proti nim. Tam si totiž zejména autority zmíněné provincie svůj oficiální francouzský jazyk před anglicismy brání. Teoretická část popisuje geografickou, historickou, i jazykovou situaci v Quebécu, a to mimo jiné za pomocí grafů a konkrétních čísel. Dále se věnuje institucím, autoritám, ale i zákonům, které staví používání francouzského jazyka před užívání anglicismů. V neposlední řadě teoretická část vysvětluje pojem anglicismus a sleduje jeho typologii. V praktické části bylo zásadní vytvořit slovník anglicismů, dohledat k nim vhodné francouzské ekvivalenty a vznést tak důraz na důležitou prioritu používání právě francouzského jazyka v Quebécu.
