Sacrifice as the most extreme expression of love: Melodramatic and spiritual mode in Petr Weigl's film The Lead Night

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce pojednává o televizní tvorbě významného českého režiséra a dramaturga Petra Weigla a jeho umělecko-filozofickém přístupu k ní. Přes kapitolu o melodramatickém modu, aplikovaném na televizní film Dva bratři (Petr Weigl, ČSSR, 1972), se práce dostává k hlavnímu předmětu zkoumání – intepretaci Olověné noci (Petr Weigl, Západní Německo / ČSSR, 1985) nejen skrze nástroje filmové vědy. V té se objevují jak prvky modu melodramatického, tak nově vysvětleného modu spirituálního. Mezi další témata práce patří pojem patos, jenž je v tvorbě Weigla všudypřítomný. Podhoubí Olověné noci pak tvoří prostředí evropského surrealismu, kterému je tedy věnován (i skrze obrazové a textové ukázky) další část práce.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis deals with the television work of the important Czech director Petr Weigl and his artistic-philosophical approach to it. Through the chapter on melodramatic mode, applied to the film Two Brothers (Petr Weigl, Czechoslovakia, 1972), the work reaches the main film of research – The Lead Night (Petr Weigl, West Germany / Czechoslovakia, 1985), which is subjected to interpretation not only through the instruments of film studies. Both elements of the melodramatic mode and the newly explained spiritual mode appear in it. Other topics include the concept of pathos, which is ubiquitous in Weigl's work. The basis of The Lead Night then forms the environment of European surrealism, to which another piece of work is devoted (also through pictorial and textual examples).
