The Lech Field 1158: The Last Public Act of Otto of Freising

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá životem, dílem a myšlenkovým světem kronikáře a biskupa Oty z Freisingu (ca 1112–1158). Klade si za cíl vysvětlit, co vedlo k Otově vystoupení na dvorském sjezdu na Lešském poli poblíž Augšpurku roku 1158, kde se Ota postavil konfliktní císařské linii a zasloužil se o usmíření císaře Fridricha Barbarossy a papeže Hadriána IV. Pomocí tohoto spojujícího článku, Lešského pole roku 1158, práce na příkladu Oty z Freisingu a jeho Historie aneb O dvou obcích (Chronica sive Historia de duabus civitatibus) a Skutků císaře Fridricha Barbarossy (Gesta Friderici Imperatoris) analyzuje vztah moci světské (regnum) a církevní (sacerdotium) v myšlení vrcholně středověkého intelektuála a zabývá se také dalšími vybranými zásadními otázkami politického dění v římsko-německé říši konce 11. a především poloviny 12. století (od Jindřicha IV. po Fridricha Barbarossu), které Ota ve svém díle a myšlení reflektoval a které jej na Lešské pole také mohly dovést. Diplomová práce tak ukazuje, že Ota z Freisingu rozhodně nebyl nekritickým obdivovatelem a zastáncem císaře Fridricha Barbarossy, ale svým dílem i vystupováním se jej snažil ovlivňovat v rámci svých ideálů, reprezentovaných především svorností a mírem jak mezi církví a říší, tak i v říši samotné.

Abstract:

The master thesis explores the life, work and intellectual world of the chronicler and bishop Otto of Freising (c. 1112–1158). The main aim is to explore what led to Otto’s last public act on the Lech Field near Augsburg in 1158 where he stood up against a conflict-laden imperial course and enabled a reconciliation between emperor Frederick Barbarossa and pope Adrian IV. Using this bridging point, the Lech Field 1158, the thesis on the example of Otto of Freising and his History of the Two Cities (Chronica sive Historia de duabus civitatibus) and The Deeds of Frederick Barbarossa (Gesta Friderici Imperatoris) analyses the relationship between the temporal (regnum) and spiritual (sacerdotium) powers in the thoughts of a high-medieval intellectual and deals also with other selected political themes of the Roman-German Empire of the late 11th century and the first half of the 12th century which Otto reflected in his work and his world of thought and which could have also led him to the Lech Field 1158. The master thesis shows that Otto of Freising was by no means an uncritical admirer and supporter of emperor Frederick Barbarossa, but that he tried, using his actions as well as works, to subtly influence the emperor to follow and fulfil his ideals of peace and unity between the Church and the Empire, but also in the Roman-German Empire itself.
