Language situation on the Channel Islands

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou ohrožených jazyků, kterými se hovoří na Normanských ostrovech. Daná problematika je blíže specifikována obecnou klasifikací ohrožených jazyků, faktory jejich úpadku a možnostmi revitalizace. Následující část práce pojednávající o Normanských ostrovech zmiňuje nejen historické souvislosti, které úpadek tamějších jazyků způsobily, ale také aktuální jazykovou situaci a charakteristiku jednotlivých normanských dialektů. Životaschopnost jazyků je určena vyhodnocením jejich postavení dle faktorů jazykové vitality zpracované organizací UNESCO. Na základě zjištěných výsledků jsou interpretovány možnosti budoucího vývoje.

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis is concerned with problems of endangered languages, which are used on the Channel Islands. Given problems are more specified by general classification of endangered languages, factors of their downgrade and possibilities of revitalization. Following part of bachelor thesis which is about Channel Islands mentions about historical context, which caused the downgrade of local languages, but also about actual languauge situation and characteristics of particular Norman dialects. The vitality of languages is given by evaluation of their placement according to the factors of measure of vitality and threat of languages is processed by UNESCO organization. The possibilities of future development are interpreted on the basis of discovered results.
