Diplomatic Missions of Two Branches of the Habsburg Dynasty between 1577-1583

Abstract:

Práce nastiňuje průběh vzájemných diplomatických misí španělské a rakouské větve habsburské dynastie ve druhé polovině 16. století, s těžištěm v prostředí dvora císaře Rudolfa II. v počátečním období jeho vlády (1577-1583). Práce se zabývá posláním a působením klíčových osobností „vnitřní“ habsburské diplomacie, vyslanců stálých i mimořádných. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována španělským vyslancům Juanovi de Borja a Guillénovi de San Clemente. Na základě rozboru jejich diplomatické korespondence a za využití modelového konceptu vztahu patron-klient se autor pokouší přiblížit podobu „španělské strany“ jakožto pole setkávání klíčových představitelů obou habsburských větví na pražském dvoře císaře Rudolfa II., mezi nimi také císařských dvořanů a císařovny-vdovy Marie Španělské.

Abstract:

The thesis outlines the development of mutual diplomatic missions of the Spanish and Austrian branches of Habsburg dynasty in the second part of 16th century, having its centre in the conditions of Rudolf II’s court during the early era of his reign (1577-1583). The work deals with the activity and mission of crucial personalities of the “inner” Habsburg’s diplomacy, permanent and extraordinary ambassadors. Special attention is paid to Spanish ambassadors Juan de Borja and Guillén de San Clemente. From the analysis of their diplomatic correspondence and with the application of the relation model patron-client the author of this thesis is striving for an approximation of the “Spanish faction” form serving as a field of encounter for many crucial representatives of two Habsburg branches at the Prague court of Rudolf II., among them also imperial courtiers and the empress-widow Maria of Austria.
