E-cigarettes waste – risks, current practice and public awareness

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis investigates the environmental implications of waste generated from e-cigarettes, focusing on the associated health risks, current waste management practices, and public awareness surrounding e-cigarette disposal. The literature review outlines the definition and composition of e-cigarettes, categorizing them into various types, with an emphasis on the rising popularity of disposable models and their contribution to electronic waste (e-waste). Through a mixed-methods approach, including a field study conducted at the Let It Roll Festival, survey data were collected to assess attendees' awareness and disposal habits regarding e-cigarette waste. Furthermore, a disassembly analysis of collected e-cigarettes was performed to evaluate the feasibility of recycling individual components. The findings reveal a troubling lack of public awareness about the environmental risks of e-cigarette waste, with many users unaware of proper disposal methods. The research underscores the urgency for collaborative efforts in addressing this growing environmental issue as e-cigarette usage continues to rise.
