New French Orthography in Textbooks

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on the use of the new French orthography in French textbooks. The first part of the thesis introduces the orthographic reform from 1990 and its new rules. In the second part, an analysis of different French textbooks was carried out in order to ascertain if they use or mention the new orthograph. The method used to achieve this aim consisted of searching for keywords and words written with the new spellings as well as getting in contact with the publishing houses. Using this method, it has been found out that the majority of textbooks does not use the new orthography as only a few of the keywords are written according to the new rules and in minimal occurrence. This conclusion has also been confirmed by the information provided by the French publishers. Only one publisher, the Czech one, uses the new orthograph consistently.

Ce mémoire de licence s'est concentré sur l'usage de la nouvelle orthographe dans les manuels scolaires. La premi?re partie du mémoire introduit la réforme de 1990 et ses nouvelles r?gles. Dans la deuxi?me, l'analyse des manuels français a été réalisée afin de déterminer s'ils utilisent ou mentionnent la nouvelle orthographe. La méthodologie utilisée pour atteindre cet objectif a consisté ? rechercher des mots-clés et des mots écrits avec la nouvelle orthographe ainsi qu'? entrer en contact avec les maisons d'édition. En utilisant cette méthode, il a été constaté que la majorité des manuels n'utilisent pas la nouvelle orthographe, car seuls quelques mots-clés ont été écrits selon les nouvelles r?gles et dans une occurrence minimale. Cette conclusion a également été confirmée par les informations fournies par les éditeurs français. Un seul éditeur, l'éditeur tch?que, utilise la nouvelle orthographe systématiquement.
