Influence of the English language on Japanese and its business culture

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis pursues the issue of the linguistic and cultural influence of the English language in Japan, especially from the point of view of using English as a language of business. The introduction focuses on the brief history of the linguistic influence of the European languages, especially English, on Japanese, and following is the brief history of international economic relations between Japan and the USA. The main part is dedicated to the typical linguistic borrowings of business English in Japanese and to their commentary from the point of view of linguistics. Attention is paid mainly to phonetical and semantical changes. This phenomenon is then put into the broader context of contemporary Japanese society, economics, and business. The work also presents a survey, which investigates the experiences with the language abilities in Japanese companies. The conclusion evaluates this phenomenon in general and states possibilities of the future development.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá jazykovým a kulturním vlivem angličtiny v Japonsku, a to zejména z hlediska používání angličtiny jako jazyka obchodu. Úvod je věnován stručné historii jazykových vlivů evropských jazyků, a zejména anglického jazyka, na japonštinu a též následuje stručná historie mezinárodních ekonomických vztahů Japonska a Ameriky. Hlavní část se věnuje typickým jazykovým výpůjčkám obchodní angličtiny v japonštině a jejich komentářem z hlediska lingvistiky. Pozornost je věnována změnám zejména v rovině fonetické a sémantické. Tento fenomén je poté umístěn do širšího kontextu současné japonské společnosti, ekonomiky a byznysu. Práce se dále věnuje dotazníkovému šetření, které zjišťuje zkušenosti s jazykovými schopnostmi v japonských firmách. V závěru práce je fenomén celkově zhodnocen a jsou zde nastíněny možnosti budoucího vývoje.
