Nation state and democracy

Abstract:

Diplomová práce "Národní stát a demokracie" zpracovává za pomoci kriticko-hermeneutické metody myšlenkové koncepty významných myslitelů 20. a 21. století. Úvodní část se zaměřuje na vyložení základních pojmů jako je národ, nacionalismus, národní stát a jejich vzájemné propojenosti. Dále je práce členěna do tří částí. První část se věnuje národu, národnímu státu a demokracii v českém filosofickém myšlení. Druhá část se pak zaměřuje na vysvětlení ústavního patriotismu v díle Jürgena Habermase včetně jeho pojetí deliberativní demokracie. Proti této demokracii je pak možné postavit kompetitivní demokracii, zde v myšlení Iana Shapira. Třetí část práce si klade za cíl ukázat myšlenkový posun v otázce národních států a modelů demokracie ve zmíněném období a zároveň nalézt odpověď na otázku, zda v současnosti lze stále hovořit o státech či demokraciích národních, nebo se transformují v postnacionální společenství.

Abstract:

The thesis "Nation State and Democracy" deals with the ideological concepts of the significant authors of the 20th and the 21st century through the critical-hermeneutic approach. The introductory part of the thesis interprets the concepts such as: nation, nationalism, nation state and the emergence of nations as well as the interconnection between them. Furthermore, the thesis is divided into three parts. The first part is dedicated to the nation, the nation-state and democracy in the Czech philosophical thinking. The second part explains the constitutional patriotism in the work of Jürgen Habermas, including his concept of deliberative democracy. Facing this democracy enables to build a competitive democracy, namely in the thinking of Ian Shapiro. The third part aims to show the intellectual shift in the query of nation-states and models of democracy in the given period. Simultaneously, the aim of this part of the thesis is to answer whether there can still be a debate concerned with states and or national democracies or whether they are transformed into the post-national community.
