The development of the Soviet economy during the 1980s

Abstract:

Svaz sovětských socialistických republik (SSSR) a jeho ekonomika byla v osmdesátých letech 20. století v hluboké krizi a silně zaostávala za svým hlavním konkurentem Spojenými státy americkými (USA). Jedním z těch, kdo se snažil ekonomiku SSSR reformovat, byl Michail Sergejevič Gorbačov. V rámci jeho reforem soustředěných v procesu celkové přestavby došlo k dosud největší snaze o reformu sovětského hospodářství. Hlavním cílem této bakalářské práce je zachytit konkrétní dopady Gorbačovových reforem na hospodářství SSSR. Práce je rozdělena do 4 kapitol. První kapitola charakterizuje období brežněvovské stagnace. Ve druhé kapitole se práce zaměřuje na proces celkové přestavby, respektive na hlavní reformy tohoto procesu. Ve třetí kapitole je věnována pozornost podstatným historicko-politickým událostem, které ovlivnily Gorbačovovy reformy. Poslední čtvrtá kapitola zachycuje dopady Gorbačovových reforem na hospodářství SSSR a také promítá tyto dopady na ekonomickou bilanci SSSR formou grafů, které zobrazují roční změny základních národně hospodářských ukazatelů.

Abstract:

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and its economy was in deep crisis during the eighties of twentieth century and stayed far behind after their main rival, the United States of America (the USA). One of the people who tried to reform economy of the USSR was Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev. In a framework of his reforms concentrated in a total process of reconstruction there was the biggest effort to reform soviet economy so far. The main goal of this bachelor thesis is to capture concrete impacts of Gorbachev's reforms on the economy of the USSR. Thesis is divided into four chapters. First chapter characterise the period of Brezhnev's stagnation. In the second chapter thesis includes process of total reconstruction, concretely on major reforms of the process. In the third chapter main focus is put on key historical-politic events which had influenced Gorbachev's reforms. Last fourth chapter captures impacts of Gorbachev's reforms on the economy of the USSR and also reflects these impacts on economic balance of the USSR in the form of graphs which shows annual changes based on basic national economic indicators.
