Angels and Devils: The Portrayal of Female Characters in Selected Plays by Eugene O'Neill

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the study of female characters in plays by Eugene O'Neill. The purpose is to analyze and map the characters and provide explanations for their frequent depiction as manipulators and villains of the story. The study uses the plays Anna Christie, Strange Interlude and Mourning Becomes Electra for the analysis and includes the feminist theory, Freudian theory of the Oedipus complex, the author's autobiographical features and the role of fate to explain the reasons they may have for their behavior. The result of the analysis showed that each female character's decision-making process was determined by the impact of the actions of men in their lives.

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na studii ženských postav dramatika Eugena O'Neilla. Jejím záměrem je nastudovat a zmapovat vybrané postavy a poskytnout možná vysvětlení, proč jsou často vyobrazované jako manipulátorky či zloduši. K tomuto účelu studie analyzuje hry s názvem Anna Christie, Podivná mezihra a Smutek sluší Elektře v návaznosti na feministickou teorii, Freudovu teorii Oidipovského komplexu, autorovy autobiografické prvky a roli osudu, aby vysvětlila možné důvody postav pro jejich chování. Výsledek analýzy poukázal na fakt, že každá ženská postava vykonává svá rozhodnutí pod vlivem mužů, kteří se objevili v jejich životě a měli na něj výrazný dopad.
