Implementation of Server-Side Rendering in uu5 Framework

Abstract:

This thesis presents the design and implementation of Server-Side Rendering (SSR) capabilities for the Unicorn Application Framework (uu5), a comprehensive corporate application framework widely used in enterprise environments. The primary challenge addressed is the significant initial load time experienced by uu5-based applications due to the framework's extensive feature set and large bundle sizes, which negatively impact user experience and search engine optimization. The implementation employs a JSDOM-based virtual environment approach, utilizing a sophisticated pooling mechanism to maintain pre-initialized browser-like environments on the server. This architecture enables React components to render server-side while preserving the Single Page Application (SPA) characteristics during client-side navigation. The solution comprises three core components: a JsdomPool for managing virtual browser instances, an SsrMiddleware for orchestrating the rendering pipeline, and client-side modifications enabling seamless hydration of server-rendered content. Performance evaluation demonstrates a tenfold improvement in Time to Interactive (TTI), reducing initial page load from 2-3 seconds to 50-100 milliseconds for First Contentful Paint. The implementation maintains full SPA functionality post-hydration while dramatically improving SEO capabilities through delivery of fully-rendered HTML to search engine crawlers. The architecture proves resilient through graceful degradation to client-side rendering when SSR fails, ensuring application reliability. Beyond its immediate practical value for uu5 applications, this work provides a generalizable blueprint for implementing SSR in other React-based frameworks through JSDOM virtualization.
