Evaluation of textile adhesives in conservation and restoration practice

Abstract:

Tato práce se věnuje zhodnocení a analýze stability adheziv potenciálně využitelných v konzervátorsko-restaurátorské praxi pro zásahy na textilních artefaktech. Nejprve se práce zaměřuje na představení vybraných adheziv, která se již používají pro konzervování a restaurování textilií nebo se jejich využití zvažuje. Dále se práce věnuje charakterizaci čtyř textilních materiálů, které jsou následně využity ke zhodnocení vlastností zkoumaných adheziv a k analýze jejich vlivu právě na vybraná textilní vlákna. V dalších kapitolách jsou popsány výsledky jednotlivých analýz. Práce je završena celkovým vyhodnocením využitelnosti adheziv a doporučením, která z nich jsou vhodná pro konzervátorsko-restaurátorskou praxi a která nikoliv.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on the evaluation and analysis of the stability of adhesives which are potentially usable in conservation and restoration of textile artefacts. In the first part, this thesis introduces properties of selected adhesives that are already used for conservation and restoration of textiles or are under consideration for their use. Next, the thesis focuses on the characterization of four different textile materials, which are then used to evaluate the properties of the investigated adhesives and to analyse their effect on the selected textile fibres. In the following chapters the results of the individual analyses are discussed. The thesis concludes with an overall evaluation of the applicability of the adhesives and recommendations as to which of them are suitable for conservation and restoration practice and which are not.
