Political and technological imagination of the Planetary

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá novým paradigmatem v současné politické ekologii, filosofii technologií a teorii médií, jež se rodí kolem pojmu Planetárního. K tomuto pojmu se v této práci přistupuje jako ke konkrétnímu typu politické a technologické imaginace, jenž je po vzoru Bottici (2014) – která chápe imaginaci pomocí pojmu imaginálního – dále analyzována se specifickým zřetelem na její vizuální a filosofické artikulace. Z toho důvodu se práce věnuje explicitním teoretickým formulacím pojmu Planetárního v dílech Gabrys (2016, 2018), Spivak (2003, 2012), Brattona (2015, 2019) nebo Conollyho (2017), stejně jako jeho implicitním formulacím v myšlení Latoura (2017, 2018), Tsing (2016), Woodarda (2013) nebo Thackera (2011) a dalších. Planetární má jako specifický druh imaginace silnou vizuální stránku, jež je v práci zkoumána z hlediska obrazů, jež pochází z činnosti infrastruktur pozorování a modelování Země, a z vesmírného výzkumu. Práce dále tvrdí, že tento druh vizuality se promítá do oblasti politických instrukcí, a to ve dvou ohledech: jednak je v jejím důsledku nutné přehodnotit vztah k technologiím, jež mají být pojímané jako kulturní techniky, jednak k autonomii jako politickému pojmu. Na základě těchto poznámek pak druhá část práce otevírá cestu ke konstrukci provizorního systému komparativní planetologie, která zde není pojímána jako exaktní, empirická věda, ale jako filosofický žánr. Komparativní planetologie je v práci prezentována prostřednictvím jejích hlavních pojmových nástrojů, jimiž jsou tzv. figury planety: mimo Planetární (jako svojí hlavní figuru) komparativní planetologie dále operuje s figurami Globálního, Terestriálního, Země bez nás a Přízračné Země. V závěru jsou pak implikace politické a technologické imaginace Planetárního vyložené s ohledem na oblast geopolitiky.

Abstract:

The dissertation critically engages with the emerging conceptual paradigm of the Planetary in contemporary political ecology, philosophy of technology and media theory. It studies the Planetary as a specific type of political and technological imagination while focusing primarily on its visual and philosophical articulations, following the treatment of imagination as the imaginal by Bottici (2014). In this respect, it tackles its explicit theoretical elaborations in Gabrys (2016, 2018), Spivak (2003, 2012), Bratton (2015, 2019) or Connolly (2017), as well as its implicit discussions in Latour (2017, 2018), Tsing (2016), Woodard (2013) and Thacker (2011), among others. The visual aspect of this imagination is pronounced by examining imagery produced by infrastructures of sensing and modelling the Earth or by space exploration. It is claimed that this visuality maps into specific political instructions, re-negotiating our relation to technology as a cultural technique, and to autonomy as a political concept. Based on these remarks, the dissertation further opens towards the construction of a provisional framework of comparative planetology, which is understood here as a philosophical genre, not as an exact, empirical science. Comparative planetology is presented here through its primary conceptual devices, so-called figures of the planet: besides the Planetary as its central figure, it considers figures of the Globe, the Terrestrial, Earth-without-us and Spectral Earth. In conclusion, implications of the political and technological imagination of the Planetary with respect to geopolitics are laid out.
