Depictions of Lynchings in Films: An Analysis of Till, A Jazzman´s Blues, and Always in Season

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on how differently the lynching of African Americans is depicted in three films: Till, A Jazzman's Blues, and Always in Season. It shortly introduces the history of lynching, its causes, and describes aspects of lynching. The second part of the thesis analyses three films and compares the depicted aspects within each other. The aim of this thesis is to show how African American directors portray the theme of lynching in these films. The analysis of the films shows that films directed by African Americans focus primarily on the emotional impact of lynchings on the family and the African American community as a whole, rather than on the depiction of violence. At the same time, they emphasise the portrayal of the history of lynching, which they want to tell from their own perspective, where they give voice to African Americans and strengthen the fight for justice.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na to, jak rozdílně je lynčování Afroameričanů zobrazeno ve třech filmech: Till, A Jazzman's Blues a Always in Season. V první části práce krátce představuje historii lynčování, jeho příčiny a popisuje aspekty lynčování. V druhé části práce analyzuje tři filmy a porovnává vyobrazené aspekty mezi sebou. Cílem práce je ukázat, jakým způsobem filmy zpracovávají téma lynčování, když je režírují Afroameričané. Analýza filmů ukazuje, že filmy režírované Afroameričany se zaměřují především na emocionální dopady lynčování na rodinu a celou afroamerickou komunitu, než na zobrazení násilí. Zároveň kladou důraz na zpracování historie lynčování, kterou chtějí odvyprávět z vlastního pohledu, kdy dají hlas Afroameričanům a posílí tak boj za spravedlnost.
