Dubliners by James Joyce: Postcolonial Irish trauma and theme of paralysis

Abstract:

Soubor krátkých povídek Dubliňané od autora Jamese Joyce se skládá z 15 příběhů popisujících každodenní život obyčejných občanů Dublinu. V této bakalářské práci bych ráda prozkoumala spojení mezi postkoloniální teorií a tématem ochrnutí ve vybraných příbězích, kterými jsou "Araby", "Counterparts" a "A Little Cloud" a jeho příčinami, jelikož cílem této práce je prokázat, že efekt ochrnutí je úzce spjat s důsledkem irského postkoloniálního traumatu a témata hybridizace, mimikry, pozice nadřazeného/podřazeného a orientalismu se dají v díle vypátrat, což činí Joycovo dílo nejen kritikou Irska, ale vyjádřením Irské kultury, stále poškozenou i mnoho let po své kolonizaci. Průzkum se bude také zabývat problematikou Joycova exilu, v jehož důsledku napsal Dubliners v zahraniční jako vzpomínku a bude si pokládat otázku zda styl, kterým popisuje samotné město a jeho občany je pouze ideálem či reflektuje pravdu. Dále práce také bere v úvahu mnohé náboženské aspekty, které se v povídkách zobrazují, v kontextu autorovy osobní víry.

Abstract:

The short story collection entitled Dubliners by James Joyce consists of 15 stories corresponding with everyday life of the ordinary citizens of Dublin. In this thesis I would like to explore the linkage of post colonial theory and the theme of paralysis in selected stories, "Araby", "Counterparts" and "A Little Cloud" and the cause of it, since this work will try to prove that the paralysis is the aftermath of the Irish postcolonial trauma and themes of hybridity, mimicry, position of superior/inferior and orientlism can be directly traced in there, making Joyce's work not only a criticism of Ireland, but a statement of Irish culture, still wounded many years after its colonization. The research will also include the issue of Joyce's exile and the fact he wrote Dubliners abroad in a state of memory and questioning if the way he describes the town and its citizen is just an ideal or if it is truly based on the real situation, alongside with the consideration that the short story collection includes various religious aspects, which is in clash with Joyce's personal religious beliefs as he neglected the Catholic church.
