US role in the EU integration process

Abstract:

Americká politika vůči Evropě prošla na konci druhé světové války významným obratem. Trumanova administrativa v samotných počátcích bipolárního uspořádání světa ustanovila západní Evropě platformu, která byla východiskem pro další vývoj věhlasného budování Evropy. Další smlouvy, jež byly iniciativou spíše evropskou, postupně formovaly tvář současného integračního uskupení zvané Evropská unie. Ovšem Spojené státy téměř po celou dobu neustále dohlížely na to, zda vývoj evropské integrace směřoval po linii, která byla pro Američany přijatelná a jakékoli zásadní vychýlení tohoto integračního procesu nemínili tolerovat. Americká zahraniční politika vůči Evropě tak vlastně hovořila dvojím jazykem: silná Evropa, ale pod vlivem USA. Avšak nástupem multipolárního uspořádání světa byl hlas Ameriky při prosazování svých zájmů na evropském kontinentě nucen postupně snižovat svůj tón. Autor v diplomové práci analyzuje a vyhodnocuje roli USA v integračním procesu EU jak v kontextu historickém, tak moderním.

Abstract:

America's policy towards Europe underwent a significant turnaround at the end of the Second World War. Truman's government, in the very beginning of the bipolar world order, established a platform for Western Europe, which was the starting point for further development of the renowned „building of Europe“. Other treaties, which were rather European initiatives, gradually formed the face of the current integration group called the European Union. However, the United States were constantly overseeing that the development of European integration was on a line acceptable to the Americans, and they also have not tolerated any deviation of this integration process. The US foreign policy towards Europe actually spoke in two languages: a strong Europe, but under the influence of the United States. However, with the emergence of a multipolar world order, America's voice in the pursuit of its interests on the European continent was forced to gradually reduce its tone. The author analyzes and assesses the role of the US in the EU integration process both in the historical and the modern context.
