Is socioemotional wealth unique for family firms?

Abstract:

Častokrát je tvrzeno, že rodinné firmy oplývají tzv. socioemocionálním bohatstvím (SEW), nicméně neexistuje žádný důkaz, který by potvrzoval absenci tohoto fenoménu i u nerodinných podniků. Tato diplomová práce si proto dává za cíl prozkoumat dosuď slabě probádanou sféru socioemocionálního bohatství u nerodinných firem. Výzkum je proveden explorativní metodou případových studií a je vykonán ve spolupráci s šesti českými firmami. Otázky pro respondenty byly vytvořeny v rámci modelu FIBER, který je tvořen pěti kategoriemi socioemocionálního bohatství, každá zabývající se jiným aspektem SEW. Ve výsledku bylo zjištěno, že socioemocionální bohatství je u nerodinných firem přítomno v podobě nezávislosti podniku na vnějších vlivech, vysoké žádostivosti dobré firemní reputace majiteli a podstatné snahy o udržování dlouhodobých a silných vztahů se zájmovými skupinami podniku. V představeném modelu jsou pro nerodinné podniky příznačné minimálně dvě z pěti kategorií SEW.

Abstract:

It is often claimed that family firms abound in so-called socio-emotional wealth (SEW), however, there is no evidence to confirm the absence of this phenomenon in non-family firms as well. The present master’s thesis therefore aims to explore the so far poorly explored area of socio-emotional wealth in non-family companies. The research is executed using the exploratory method of case studies and is carried out in cooperation with six Czech companies. Questions for respondents were created within the framework of the FIBER model, which consists of five categories of socio-emotional wealth, each addressing a different aspect of SEW. It was found that socio-emotional wealth is present in non-family companies in the form of the company's independence from external influences, the high desirability of the company's good reputation by the owners and substantial efforts to maintain long-term and strong relationships with the company's stakeholders. In the presented model, at least two of the five SEW categories are confirmed to be applicable for non-family businesses.
