Study of formation of clusters generated by laser ablation using time-of-flight mass spectrometry

Abstract:

Tato Disertace se zabývá studiem chemické povahy dějů při laserové ablaci za použití komerčně dostupné hmotové spektrometrie s laserovou desorpcí a ionizací pomocí matrice a analyzátorem doby letu (MALDI TOF MS) včetně vývoje nových metodik hmotové spektrometrie MALDI TOF. Chemická povaha laserově-ablačních dějů byla studována na různých systémech (arsen, sulfidy arsenu, oxid selenový a oxid seleničitý) s cílem dosažení lepšího porozumění situaci chemických vazeb a struktur klastrů. První část studia je věnována nalezení optimálních podmínek výkonu laseru pro generování klastrů pro použité experimentální uspořádání. Dále je diskutován vliv dalšího faktoru na chemickou povahu laserově-ablačních dějů a povahu vazeb v generovaných klastrech, kterým je vlnová délka laseru. Teoretické výpočty ab initio byly provedeny, aby byla předpovězena stabilita struktur klastrů a reakčních mechanismů. Celkem bylo popsáno nejméně 20 nových klastrů, které nebyly dosud zveřejněny ve výzkumné literatuře. Byla popsána nová metodika přípravy vzorku anorganických materiálů pomocí MALDI TOF MS za účelem usnadnění analýzy takových vzorků bez předchozí potřeby jejich rozpuštění. Pro analýzu silných oxidačních činidel, jakým je oxid selenový SeVIO3, byly zavedeny grafitové mikrokelímky pokryté tenkou diamantu-podobnou vrstvou. Je uveden nový postup umožňující analýzu látek vysoce citlivých na vlhkost pomocí MALDI TOF MS, díky připojení “suchého boxu” k přístroji, známého z anorganické chemie. Disertační práce rovněž obsahuje přehled experimentálních metod přípravy klastrů, jejich použití, motivace jejich výzkumu, stručný průřez technikou hmotové spektrometrie a rovněž některé omezení mající vztah k použitému experimentálnímu uspořádání, jakými jsou rozlišení a kalibrace.

Abstract:

This Thesis deals with the study concerning the chemical nature of the laser ablation processes carried out by means of commercially available matrix assisted laser desorption ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI TOF MS) and development of new MALDI TOF mass spectrometric methodolgies. The chemical nature of the laser ablation processes was studied within different systems (arsenic, arsenic sulfides, selenium(VI) trioxide, and selenium(IV) dioxide) with the aim of achieving a better understanding of the situation of chemical bonding and cluster geometries. Firstly, the study is devoted to finding the optimal laser power conditions for cluster generation under the used experimental setup. Additionally, the role of another factor on the chemical nature of the ablation process is discussed, which is laser wavelength. The theoretical ab initio calculations were carried out to predict the stability of cluster geometries and the reaction mechanisms. Totally, at least 20 new clusters not reported before in research literature, are described. The new methodology of sample preparation for the MALDI TOF MS of inorganic materials has been described in order to facilitate their analysis without previous need for analyte solubilisation. For the analysis of strong oxidising agents, such as the selenium(VI) trioxide, the graphite microcrucibles covered with a thin diamond-like layer were introduced. A new approach enabling the MALDI TOF mass spectrometric analysis of highly moisture sensitive compounds by attaching the “glove box” known from the inorganic chemistry to the instrument is presented. The Thesis also encompasses an overview of the experimental methods of cluster preparation, their applications, motivations for their research, concise background of the mass spectrometric technique, and also a few limitations pertaining to the used experimental setup, such as resolution and calibration.
