Alteration of the blood-brain barrier and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier after nervous system injury

Abstract:

Hematoencefalická a hematolikvorová bariéra tvoří rozhraní mezi centrální nervovou soustavou a krví. Jejich správná funkce je důležitá pro zachování homeostázy mozku, ale i zbytku organizmu. Chrání CNS před toxickými látkami, či průnikem patogenů. Zároveň však udržují potřebné látky v organismu v přesně požadovaných koncentrácích. Při různých onemocněních či úrazech dochází k patologickým změnám jejich propustnosti. Cílem této práce je shrnout dosavadní poznatky o funkci a molekulární stavbě obou bariér a popsat k jakým změnám na buněčné a molekulární úrovni dochází po porušení nervové soustavy v důsledku různých onemocnění a traumatických úrazů. Studium bariér mozku má velký význam hlavně při objasnění příčin a důsledků poškození nervové soustavy, ale také v oblasti farmakologické léčby.

Abstract:

Blood-brain barrier and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier form the interface between the central nervous system and the blood. Their normal function is necessary for maintaining homeostatic environment in the brain but also in the rest of the organism. They protect CNS from the toxic substances and pathogen infiltration. At the same time, they maintain exact concentration of substances inside. During some diseases or injuries their permeability is altered in pathological way. The aim of this thesis is to summarize present-day information about function and molecular basis of both barriers and their molecular alterations as consequence of several illnesses and traumatic injuries. The study of blood-brain barriers is of a great importance for understanding the causes and consequences of nervous system diseases but also in the field of pharmacology.
