Formulation of Memory in the Novel The Absent City by Ricardo Piglia

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis is focused on Argentinian literature of the second half of the 20th century, in particular on the novel The Absent City written by the Argentinian novelist Ricardo Piglia, which was written only a few years after the end of the dictatorship. In its first and second parts, the thesis deals with the life and work of the author and the principal topics that appear in his work. The third part is dedicated to the history of Argentina after the fall of Peronism, that is, to the Falklands War, the military dictatorships and the redemocratization process. The last, fourth, part, presents an analysis of the novel The Absent City from the historical memory’s point of view. It focuses on the interrelationships between the analysed novel and the reality during the dictatorship, on the impact of the political system on the life of ordinary people, as well as on the ability of the citizens to fight against the system and to cope with its consequences. The analysis is based on the individual chapters of the novel. The principal goal of the thesis is to show the way the historical memory, the politics and the national trauma that followed the fall of the totalitarian regime are reflected in the text.

Abstract:

Práce se soustředí na argentinskou literaturu druhé poloviny 20. století, konkrétně na dílo La Ciudad ausente argentinského spisovatele Ricarda Piglii, jež jeho tvůrce napsal několik let po skončení diktatury. V první a druhé části bakalářská práce pojednává o životě a díle autora a hlavních tématech, které se v jeho díle objevují. Třetí část je věnována historii Argentiny po pádu perónismu, tedy válce o Malvínské ostrovy, období vojenských diktatur a procesu redemokratizace země. V poslední, čtvrté části, se práce zabývá rozborem díla La ciudad ausente z pohledu historické paměti. Zaměřuje se na souvislosti mezi analyzovaným dílem a realitou v období diktatury, na vliv politického režimu na život obyvatel, na jejich schopnost proti režimu bojovat a na schopnost vyrovnat se s jeho následky. Analýza se opírá o jednotlivé kapitoly románu. Hlavním cílem práce je ukázat, jakým způsobem se v textu odráží historická paměť, politika a národní trauma, které následovalo po skončení totalitního systému.
