Landscape in Hardy's The Return of the Native

Abstract:

The subject of this undergraduate thesis is a role of the landscape in the Hardy´s novel The Return of the Native. The fictive landscape Egdon Heath plays a significant role in the novel and the author devotes an extensive care to it. The landscapes might even be considered one of the main characters which influences behaviour, thinking and fate of other characters as well as the plot of the novel itself. Hardy uses number of methaphores and method of personification. First two chapters of the thesis are devoted to the real landscape which became an author´s inspiration and to the language which is used to its description. The next chapter analyses how the landscape interferes with the lives of its inhabitants and influences the life of the community. The fourth chapter deals with traditions and customs of the heath folk. The second part of this undergraduate thesis focuses on main characters of the novel in respect to their relationship with the landscape. It analyses how the landscape influences their lives and fates.

Abstract:

Předmětem této bakalářské práce je role krajiny v díle Thomase Hardyho Rodákův návrat. Krajina fiktivního vřesoviště Egdon Heath zde hraje významnou roli a je jí věnován značný prostor. Lze ji dokonce považovat za jednu z hlavních postav, která významně ovlivňuje chování, myšlení i osud dalších postav i děj celého románu. Hardy využívá řady metafor a nechává krajinu ožít pomocí personifikace.V prvních dvou kapitolách se tato bakalářská práce zabývá skutečnou krajinou, která se stala autorovi inspirací a jazyku, který je v románu využíván k jejímu popisu. V další kapitole analyzuje, jakým způsobem krajina zasahuje do života samotných obyvatel a ovlivňuje život celé komunity, která zde žije. Čtvrtá kapitola je pak věnována tradicím a zvykům, které místní obyvatelé udržují. Druhá část této bakalářské práce se zabývá jednotlivými hlavními postavami románu s ohledem na jejich vztah ke krajině. Analyzuje vliv krajiny na jejich život.
