Embargo as a tool of North American policy towards Cuba

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na analýzu vývoje amerického embarga na Kubě a jeho dopad na kubánskou společnost a ekonomiku. Práce se snaží odpovědět na tyto otázky: Jaké faktory ovlivnily úspěšnost a průběh amerického embarga na Kubě? Jaký byl dopad embarga na kubánskou ekonomiku a jak se tento dopad promítá do každodenního života obyvatelstva? Výsledky ukazují, že sovětská a venezuelská ekonomická pomoc měla významnou roli a napomohla růstu kubánské ekonomiky, tím se snížila úspěšnost embarga. Americká politika vůči Kubě se v průběhu let vyvíjela a měnila v závislosti na politických prioritách a strategiích jednotlivých prezidentů. Embargo nesplnilo svůj cíl způsobit ekonomický pád a svrhnout vládu, ale má dopad na zhoršení životních podmínek obyvatelstva. Zároveň je třeba brát v úvahu, že embargem je také vyvíjen nátlak na kubánskou vládu v oblasti lidských práv, kde Kuba v posledních letech udělala kroky ke zlepšení situace.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the analysis of the evolution of the US embargo on Cuba and its impact on Cuban society and economy. The thesis seeks to answer the following questions. What has been the impact of the embargo on the Cuban economy and how does this impact translate into the daily life of the population? The results show that Soviet and Venezuelan economic aid played a significant role and helped the Cuban economy grow, thereby reducing the success of the embargo. U.S. policy toward Cuba has evolved and changed over the years depending on the political priorities and strategies of individual presidents. The embargo has not achieved its goal of causing an economic collapse and toppling the government, but it has had the effect of worsening the living conditions of the population. At the same time, it should be taken into account that the embargo also puts pressure on the Cuban Government in the area of human rights, where Cuba has made steps to improve the situation in recent years.
