The notion of future tense in English: Reflection in grammar books, coursebooks and online sources

Abstract:

Otázka, zda v angličtině existuje skutečný budoucí čas, nebo pouze různé způsoby popisování budoucnosti, z nichž žádný nemůže být označen za budoucí čas, byla zohledněna v celé řadě gramatických knih, učebnic a jiných zdrojů. Nezdá se však, že by doposud byla učiněna komplexní analýza toho, jak zmiňované zdroje budoucí čas pojímají. Cílem této bakalářské práce je prozkoumat, jak byl koncept budoucího času prezentován v knihách anglické gramatiky, učebnicích a internetových článcích od konce sedmdesátých let až do současnosti. Kromě tohoto rozboru práce rovněž přináší komparaci rozličných teorií a názorů, jež byly během výzkumu nalezeny.

Abstract:

The issue whether there is either a genuine grammatical future tense in English or merely various ways of describing future time, none of which can be labelled as a future tense, has been reflected in a great number of grammar books, textbooks and other sources. Yet a complex analysis of the notion of future tense in these resources does not seem to have been realized so far. The aim of the bachelor thesis is to examine how the concept of future tense has been presented in English grammar books, coursebooks and online articles since the late 1970s to the present. Apart from this analysis, the thesis also provides comparison of various theories and opinions found during the research.
