The man and animal in burial rites 9th-10th centuries in Slovakia

Abstract:

This thesis informs about the importance of animals in lives of people living in Slovakia in 9th and 10th century. The relationship between man and animal can be reconstructed through archaeological finds of animal remains from burial grounds and settlements. The thesis contains a list of 29 burial grounds and 15 settlements where animal bones were found. There were inserted skeletons of horses in people’s graves at the burial grounds many times. That is evidence of their special importance in society, not only in life, but also after death. We have information of the composition of meaty food from settlements, which represent the most common species occurring in the vicinity of a person.

Abstract:

Táto práca informuje o význame zvierat v živote obyvateľov žijúcich na území Slovenska v 9. a 10. stor. Vzťah človeka a zvieraťa môžeme rekonštruovať prostredníctvom archeologických nálezov zvieracích ostatkov z pohrebísk a sídlisk. Práca obsahuje súpis 29 pohrebiskových lokalít a 15 sídliskových lokalít, na ktorých boli zaznamenané zvieracie kosti. Do hrobov ľudí sa na pohrebiskách najčastejšie vkladali časti alebo celé skelety koní, čo dokazuje ich špeciálny význam v spoločnosti nielen počas života, ale aj po smrti. Zo sídliskových nálezov čerpáme informácie o zložení mäsitej potravy, z ktorých je možné vyvodiť najčastejšie druhy zvierat vyskytujúce sa v blízkosti človeka.
