The effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and rhizosphere bacteria on maize (Zea mays L.) growth

Abstract:

V rámci diplomové práce jsem realizoval dva nádobové experimenty, jejichž cílem bylo kvantifikovat vliv půdních mikroorganismů na růst rostlin. První experiment byl zaměřen na kvantifikaci vlivů třech druhů arbuskulárních hub a dvou druhů rhizobakterií na růst nadzemních částí kukuřice seté (Zea mays L.). Ve druhém pokusu byl sledován vliv tří komerčních přípravků – Biovin, TurfComp a Symbivit na růst nadzemní a kořenové biomasy a odnožování kostřavy červené (Festuca rubra L.) ve třech zálivkovách režimech. Rhizosférní mikroorganismy neovlivnily růst nadzemní biomasy kukuřice, což mohlo být způsobeno nízkou kolonizací kořenů arbuskulárními mykorhizními houbami, malým objemem květináčů, nebo příliš vysokým obsahem živin v použité půdě. V některých variantách komerční přípravky pozitivně ovlivnily růst F. rubra, zvláště Biovin zvýšil růst nadzemní biomasy. Nebylo však zjištěno, zda se na zlepšení růstu rostlin podílela půdní mikroflóra nebo živiny z těchto přípravků. Na počet odnoží neměly komerční přípravky vliv. Zjištěná data ukazují, že aplikace rhizosférních mikroorganismů je možnou cestou ke zlepšení vitality rostlin a že s jejich pomocí lze v některých případech snížit spotřebu zálivkové vody a hnojiv. Praktická použitelnost těchto technologií je však stále omezená zejména pro svou závislost na vysokém počtu vnějších faktorů.

Abstract:

Two pot experiments were performed in the frame of my diploma work. They were aimed to quantify the effects of selected soil microorganisms on plants growth. The first experiment focused on the effects of three arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi species and two rhizobacteria species on the shoot mass formation in maize (Zea mays L.). In the second experiment, the effects of three commercially available products, Biovin, TurfComp and Symbivit, on the growth and branching of red fescue (Festuca rubra L.) under three water regimes were quantified. All the rhizosphere microorganisms tested in my experiment did not affected maize growth. This outcome may be explained by a low colonization of maize roots by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi caused by a short period of maize cultivation, by a limited volume of cultivation pots or by a high content of mineral nutrients in soil used. The growth of F. rubra was positively affected in some treatments. For example, Biovin stimulated the growth of red fescue aboveground parts. However, I was not able to determine the mechanism of this stimulation, which in principle may be either changed soil microbial community or nutrients added to the substrate with the commercial products tested. No differences in red fescue branching were observed. My results suggest that application of rhizosphere microorganisms is a possible way to enhance plant vitality and if used, the need of watering and fertilizing may be reduced. Practical application of this technology is however still very limited namely due to high dependency of its outcome on many ecological factors.
