Non-heterosexuals and their self-esteem in the context of practicing the Catholic faith

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci jsme se zaměřovali na vývoj úrovně a stability globálního self-esteemu (GSE) u neheterosexuálů, kteří byli, anebo stále jsou, aktivně věřícími katolíky. V teoretickém úvodu se nejprve zaměřujeme na úroveň a stabilitu GSE, což se jeví jako nejvhodnější pro tento druh výzkumu. S oběma aspekty souvisí běžné sociální a romantické vztahy, vztahy s rodiči v dětství a vztah k sobě samému. Popisujeme autobiografickou paměť jako druh paměti zahrnující subjektivní prožitky a čáru života, jež je jejím grafickým znázorněním. Poukazujeme na relevantnost rozdělení sexuální orientace na homosexuální a heterosexuální a také definici našeho souboru neheterosexuálů. Dále popisujeme model vývoje sexuální identity podle Casseové jako využitelný pro náš výzkum. Oddělujeme religiozitu jako sociální aspekt náboženství, který má spíše negativní dopady na sexuální menšiny, které blíže popisujeme, a spiritualitu, která je spíše osobní a subjektivní a jež má na sexuální menšiny dopady pozitivní. Upřesňujeme mechanismy negativních dopadů křesťanské religiozity, které u sexuálních menšin souvisí s konfliktem sexuální a náboženské identity a internalizovanou homonegativitou. Zmiňujeme také negativní postoje katolické církve k homosexuálům a specifika České republiky jako málo religiózní, ale velmi spirituální země. V rámci výzkumu jsou uskutečněny polostrukturované rozhovory, v jejichž rámci je využita metoda čáry života jako doplněk rozhovorů, který slouží jako grafické znázornění vývoje GSE participanty. Tři rozhovory s participanty ve věku od 20 do 24 let jsou následně analyzovány pomocí interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy. Hlavní témata vzešlá analýzy se týkají odstupu od minulých negativních zkušeností, významu víry, vnímání sebe samého jako základu, čekání na okamžik, hodnocení a snahy vydedukovat. Výsledky srovnáváme s jinými výzkumy a uvádíme do teoretických souvislostí. Nejdůležitější jsou zjištění, že s vnímáním vývoje GSE by mohla souviset psychologická vzdálenost. Mohl by existovat vztah mezi spiritualitou či vztahu s Bohem a stabilitou GSE. Ruminace společně s nízkou emoční jasností by mohla souviset s tím, nakolik si jsou lidé vlastního GSE vědomi. V našem výzkumu je také významné, že se u jednoho participanta objevila souvislost introjikovaných obav se stabilitou GSE. Poukazujeme také na to, že intervence založené na mindfulness by mohly mít na naši cílovou skupinu pozitivní vliv. Naše výsledky poukazují na důležitost zabývání se všemi aspekty GSE, tedy úrovní, stabilitou a kontingencí a současně podtrhují důležitost věnovat se v kvantitativním výzkumu religiozitě a spiritualitě souběžně. Tam, kde je to možné, doporučujeme u participantů sledovat více aspektů sexuální orientace než jen jeden z nich.

Abstract:

In this bachleor thesis, we focused on the development of the level and stability of global self-esteem (GSE) of non-heterosexuals, who are or have been practicing catholicism. In the theoretical introduction, we first focus on the level and stability of global self-esteem (GSE), which seems to be the most suitable for this type of research. Both aspects are related to common social and romantic relationships, relationships with parents in childhood and a relationship with oneself. We describe autobiographical memory as a type of memory which includes subjective experiences and the life line, which serves as its graphical representation. We point out the relevancy of the distinction of sexual orientation into a heterosexual and a homosexual one, as well as the definition of our set of non-heterosexuals. Further, we describe the model of development of sexual identity according to Casse and its usability for our research. We distinguish religiosity, the social aspect of religion with negative impacts on sexual minorities, which we then describe further, and spirituality, which is more subjective and personal, and which has a positive impact on such sexual minorities. We specify the mechanisms of the negative impacts of Christian religiosity, which in sexual minorities are related to a conflict between their sexual and religious identity and internalized homonegativity. We also mention the negative stance of the Catholic church towards homosexuality and the nature of the Czech Republic as little religious but very spiritual country. For the research, semi-structured interviews were performed, in which the life line method is used as a complement, serving as a graphical representation of the participants’ GSE development. Three interviews with participants aged 20 to 24 are then analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. The main topics arising from this analysis are related to distancing from past negative experiences, the significance of faith, the perception of oneself as a foundation, waiting for the moment, evaluation and efforts to deduce. We then compare the results to other research projects and put them into their according theoretical contexts. The most important is a discovery of a possible connection between the perception of the GSE development and psychological distance. There could exist a connection between one’s relationship with God and GSE stability. Rumination, along with low emotional clarity, could be related to how perceptive people are of their own GSE. It is also relevant for our research that in one participant, there appeared to be a connection between introjected fears and GSE stability. We also point out that mindfulness-based interventions could have a positive impact on our target group. Our results show the importance of focusing on all aspects of GSE, that being level, stability and contingency and also underline the importance of parallel approach towards religiosity and spirituality in quantitative research. Where possible, we recommend to observe more aspects of participants’ sexual orientation rather than just one of them.
