The white nose syndrom: current state of knowledge and its effect on bat populations

Abstract:

Tato práce shrnuje dosavadní poznatky o tzv. syndromu bílého nosu (White-nose syndrom), onemocnění způsobeném patogenní houbou Geomyces destruktans napadajícím hibernující netopýry. Onemocnění je provázeno atypickým chováním postižených netopýrů a způsobuje jejich masovou mortalitu. Dosavadní hrubé odhady mluví o více než miliónu uhynulých netopýrů, přičemž predikce dopadu WNS na netopýří populace při současné úrovni mortality naznačují možnost lokálních extinkcí i u nejběžnějších druhů v časovém horizontu několika desetiletí. WNS byl poprvé zaznamenán ve východní části USA v r. 2006 a od té doby bylo následovalo lavinovité šíření do dalších oblastí. V současnosti je jeho výskyt potvrzen v 17 státech USA a ve 3 kanadských provinciích. V zimě 2008/2009 bylo toto onemocnění prvně zaznamenáno i v Evropě (Francie), kde je v současnosti známo z 6 zemí. Na rozdíl od Ameriky však v Evropě zatím nebyla zaznamenána masová mortalita, což poukazuje na odlišnou etiologii geomykózy na evropském kontinentu. Práce dále shrnuje dosavadní nastíněné možnosti zabránění dalšího šíření nemoci a zmírnění dopadu na netopýří populace.

Abstract:

This thesis summarises current knowledge about the White-nose syndrome, a disease caused by a pathogenic fungus Geomyces destructans, which attacks hibernating bats. The disease is accompanied with atypical behaviour of affected bats and causes their mass mortality. Current rough estimates shows more than one million dead bats, whereas the prediction of effects of the WNS for bat populations with the current level of mortality suggests the possibility of local extinctions even by the most common species in the horizon of several decades. WNS was first observed in the eastern part of the U.S. in 2006 and since then has been followed by the avalanche spread to other areas. Currently, its presence is confirmed in 17 U.S. states and 3 Canadian provinces. In winter 2008/2009 was the disease first recorded in Europe (France), where it is now known from 6 countries. However, unlike America, In Europe was not recorded the mass mortality, which suggests a different ethiology of the geomycosis on the European continent. The thesis also reviews the outlined options for the prevention of further spread of the disease and to mitigate the impact on bat populations.
